Perturbations on resonance

Monday, December 21st, 2009

Hi all If I have an external perturbation (e.g. light) acting on an atom, and the frequency of the perturbation ω is close to the transition frequency ω 12 of the atom (we only look at the states 1 and 2), then is this equivalent of saying that the perturbation is small? If the above is not correct, then if I say that the perturbation does not change the energies of the atom much, then is this equivalent of saying that the perturbation is small?
